Tuesday Night Storm Aftermath Update

As we continue the process of digging out from the historic blizzard that hit our region I wanted to share some information with you to keep handy as we deal with the aftermath of the storm. I know it can be frustrating that some roads have not been cleared yet. Please know crews are working 24/7 to accomplish this goal. If you have a non-emergency medical issue that you need to take care of but your road has not been cleared please feel free to call our office and we will try to assist if possible. If you are having a condition requiring immediate medical attention call 911. The Blizzard that hit our region was historic with very high totals of snowfall. Driving is still hazardous and refreezing will occur at night so watch out for black ice. Our area schools are closed tomorrow and some have already announced closures through the end of the week. For a complete listing of school closings go here. OPM has delayed the opening of the federal government for tomorrow by three hours but you can continue to check for updates here. Metro service started today on every line except for the Silver Line. Metro will provide free shuttle service from Silver Line Metro station to the West Falls Church station starting tomorrow morning -- for Metro updates go here. VRE will operate normal service tomorrow -- for VRE updates go here. Please continue to check on your elderly or infirm neighbors and those who might be in need. Stay safe.

Safety Tips:
- Visit www.vaemergency.gov/readyvirginia.
- Use flashlights for emergency lighting instead of candles.
- Unplug electrical equipment until a steady power supply returns.
- Practice proper generator and surface heater safety.
- Leave one light turned on so you know when power is restored.
- Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car. Traffic signals will stop working during an outage, creating traffic congestion. If you come upon a non-working traffic signal, treat each traffic light as a four-way stop, with the driver on the right having the right-of-way. Proceed with caution only when traffic permits and enter intersections only when it is safe to do so, using your turn signals to let other motorists know your intentions.
- If traffic signals are on flash, treat a flashing red as a stop (treat like a stop sign). For flashing yellow, proceed with caution.
