Rep. Comstock Asks For Immediate Federal Assistance for the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force

May 19, 2017
Press Release

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) sent a letter to United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting that $1.92 million be granted to the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force (NVRGTF) as soon as possible by using the Department of Justice’s Asset Forfeiture Fund.  In 2012, the Asset Forfeiture Fund was used to help fund the NVRGTF.

“In 2016, the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force provided assistance on 14 homicides including the horrific gang-related murder of a 15-year old girl.  Since last fall, there have been eight gang-related homicides in the Northern Virginia region.  With the resurgence of MS-13 and other gangs in Northern Virginia, our law enforcement officers needs additional resources to combat gang activity ranging from human trafficking to trafficking in drugs such as heroin, not to mention assault and homicide.  The Department of Justice has used the Asset Forfeiture Fund to aid the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force in the past.  With this documented resurgence in gang activity, the task force and our community are in need of such assistance now more than ever.”

“On behalf of the Northern Virginia Police Chiefs and the Loudoun County Sheriff, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude for Congresswoman Comstock's support of the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force,” said Jay Lanham, Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force.  “Criminal gangs pose a serious threat to our communities and financial support is immediately needed to address their illegal activities.”
