Loudoun Times Op-Ed: Cybersecurity must be a top priority
Like so many of my constituents, I have been privileged that my career included service as a federal employee. I worked for my predecessor, Congressman Frank Wolf as a senior aide and served as a senior official at the Department of Justice after September 11th.
Unfortunately, like thousands of my fellow constituents, I recently received a letter from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) saying that I am among the approximately 4.2 million current and former federal employees who may have had their personal information “compromised” or stolen as the result of OPM being the target of an apparently massive data breach that appears to have gone on for up to a year without being detected. And, unfortunately, potentially 18 million federal employees, contractors and others will be getting the same bad news in the weeks to come. There are still many questions to be answered about how this happened and how it can be prevented in the future.
