House Passes Appropriations Bill With Rep. Comstock HIDTA Increase
Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) released the following statement after her High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) amendment No. 217 which will increase funding for the HIDTA Program by $5 million in the Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill. Total HIDTA funding will be $275 million in FY18:
“Much of Virginia’s 10th Congressional District has been designated a HIDTA territory. With over 64,000 American lives having been lost to drug overdose in the first 9 months of last year, it is clear that this epidemic is worse than ever and more needs to be done. Last year alone, Virginia saw a 38% increase in fatal drug overdoses, tragically resulting in over 1,400 deaths – more than traffic accidents.
“I have worked with our local, state, and federal entities to make it a priority to fight against the opioid epidemic in the United States, and recently held roundtables with the Office of National Drug Control Policy in our district to examine what tactics are proving most effective in fighting addiction. Increased funding for HIDTA is necessary given the continued rise in deaths and my amendment allocates much-needed funding to help combat the epidemic that has struck families in our community.”
