Comstock Welcomes The GW Mammovan To Loudoun County

September 9, 2015
Press Release

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) is pleased to announce that the Mobil Mammography unit of The GW Medical Faculty Associates, better known as The Mammovan, will be in Loudoun County on Monday, September 21st from 10am to 2pm in the parking lot of HealthWorks located at 163 Fort Evans Rd, NE, Leesburg, Virginia 20176.

“With next month being breast cancer awareness month we wanted to get a jumpstart on making women aware that early detection is the key to survival,” said Congresswoman Comstock.  “The Mammovan is a great tool to bring early detection to women who may not otherwise get a lifesaving mammogram.”

“I am delighted that the Mammovan will be in Loudoun County offering lifesaving screening mammograms,” said Rachel Brem, MD, Director of Breast Imaging at The GW Medical Faculty Associates and Vice Chair of Radiology at The George Washington University School of Medicine. “The death rate from breast cancer has decreased by 30% in the past 20 years. Early breast cancer is a curable disease. Therefore, women should get their life saving mammograms to detect early curable breast cancer.”

There are no walk-ins for the GW Mammovan and all appointments need to be made ahead of time by calling the Mammovan’s bilingual hotline at 202-741-3252.  Other important information for those seeking a mammogram by the GW Mammovan are:

1. They must be aged 40 or older, or between the ages of 30-39 if they have an immediate relative diagnosed with breast cancer.

2. They shouldn't have had a mammogram in the previous 12 months.

3. The van is used for preventative screening, so women with a past history of breast cancer will be directed to an alternate program for more appropriate care.

4. Women with breast implants will be directed to an alternate screening technology not available on the van.

5. They should be free of any breast symptoms.  Women with symptoms will be guided to a program for more appropriate care.
