Comstock Statement on Joint Resolution to Establish the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission

February 16, 2017
Press Release

Washington, DC - Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) released the following statement after cosponsoring the joint resolution to establish the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission:

“Safety is our number one priority for Metro and that is why I joined my regional delegation colleagues in a joint resolution to give Congressional consent to the formation of the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission (MSC).  We must make Metro into a safe, reliable transit system that our region deserves and this Congressional consent will be the final legislative step once the jurisdictions pass the MSC legislation in the coming weeks.   Once the process is complete and the commission is fully operational, the Federal Transit Administration will release the funds they are currently withholding from the jurisdictions.  We must put the agency on solid financial footing and require that the proper reforms are made to ensure safety and reliability of the system. I will continue to work with our local and state officials, my colleagues in Congress, and with the business and rider communities that rely on the system every day so that we can arrive at a fair and equitable solution for restructuring and reorganizing Metro.”
