Commonwealth of Virginia Selected as part of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Integration Pilot Program (IPP)

May 9, 2018
Press Release

Washington DC - Congresswoman Barbara Comstock (R-VA) joined U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to announce that Virginia Tech’s Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, the Virginia Autonomous Systems Center of Excellence, Virginia’s Center for Innovation Technology, and additional partners will participate in the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Integration Pilot Program (IPP).

“I am pleased that the application by the Commonwealth has been selected for the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Integration Pilot Program (IPP).  Virginia is a technology hub, and this selection by Secretary Chao and her team at the Department of Transportation highlights even more that Virginia is a leader in the future of aviation and innovation.  Drone technology is moving at a rapid pace, and Virginia is and will continue to be at the center of this growth industry and this pilot program will continue the leadership role for the Commonwealth.”

This project will help better inform a commonsense regulatory field while simultaneously helping to clarify and meet the need for qualified operators, and educate the public on the quickly expanding landscape for UAS applications.  The Commonwealth’s team will conduct flight operations in both rural and urban areas and will focus on package delivery, linear infrastructure inspection, and emergency management operations.  These commercial ventures are considered the most promising and will be able to simulate operations using line of sight, flights over populated areas, and operations after dark
